THE GAME GUIDE

How to play Decoder.

Crack the symbols, identify the word, and keep an eye on your guesses. Decoder turns the familiar word-guessing puzzle into a multi-round encryption challenge.

Play the daily puzzle ↗

First, crack the code.

Each Decoder word appears as a set of encrypted symbols. Your job is to work out the hidden word by entering valid word guesses with the on-screen keyboard. Every guess gives you information about where the letters belong.

  1. Look at the encrypted word. The symbols keep the answer a mystery until you solve it.
  2. Enter a valid word. Use the keyboard to submit your guess.
  3. Read the color feedback. A teal letter is in the correct position; an orange letter belongs in the word but is in the wrong position.
  4. Adjust your next guess. Keep the teal placements and reconsider the orange ones to narrow down the answer.
  5. Find the word before you run out of guesses. The standard instructions give you four guesses for a word; difficulty settings can change how challenging a round feels.
A GOOD FIRST GUESS

Start with a word that uses several different common letters. You'll learn more than you would from a guess that repeats the same letter again and again.

Daily game or practice mode?

Daily is Decoder's multi-round challenge. Solve the words across the rounds, watch your time, and compare your results on the daily leaderboard. You can check your daily statistics inside the game.

Practice is for playing without waiting for the next daily puzzle. It's a good place to work on recognizing patterns, experiment with your opening guesses, or just enjoy another word.

Build your own challenge.

Decoder also lets signed-in players make a custom puzzle from a word or short phrase and share a puzzle link with a friend. You can add a message and, when available in the creation form, an optional password. It's a fun way to turn a familiar word into a private challenge.

Five small ways to get better.

  • Use each guess to test something. A guess should narrow down the letter positions, not just sound plausible.
  • Track position and presence separately. Teal gives you a location. Orange gives you a letter to relocate.
  • Watch common word endings. Once a pattern emerges, look for likely suffixes and letter pairs.
  • Try the practice game. Repetition helps make the color clues feel intuitive.
  • Don't panic over the timer. Focus on useful guesses; speed becomes easier with familiarity.
