THE GAME GUIDE

How to play Griddle.

Make words from letter tiles, keep your score climbing, and make smart use of crossings. Griddle is a fast-moving word game where the board doesn't give you much time to think.

Play Griddle ↗

Build words. Keep moving.

Griddle challenges you to place letter tiles into a grid and form valid words. Each successful word adds to your score. As you play, new tiles arrive and the space available to you becomes increasingly important.

  1. Look at the current tiles and open spaces. Find a place where your next letter could make or extend a valid word.
  2. Place tiles to form words. The game checks your word combinations and scores valid words.
  3. Use intersections. A crossing can be worth three times the points, so a tile that helps two words can be especially valuable.
  4. Keep an eye on the incoming tile. The pace is part of the challenge; don't spend every moment planning a perfect word.
  5. Avoid errors and an empty score. Invalid tiles cost points. The instructions warn that three strikes or a score of zero end the run.
THE INTERSECTION ADVANTAGE

Before you place a promising tile, check whether it can contribute to a word in a second direction. A good crossing can be more valuable than simply making the longest word you see.

What makes a good move?

Griddle rewards the balance between speed, vocabulary, and placement. Try to leave room around the edges of your words instead of boxing yourself in. A short, valid word that opens up new crossings is often more useful than a risky long word with nowhere to grow.

Pay attention to the three-strike indicator and your score. An invalid play can undermine earlier gains, while a careful intersection can turn a modest run into a strong one. The moment you notice the board getting crowded, prioritize moves that keep future placement options open.

Save your score and compare.

Five tips for a better score.

  • Watch the grid. Think about where the next two tiles might go, not just where the current tile fits.
  • Favor useful intersections. Crossings multiply scoring opportunities.
  • Stay within the dictionary. A clever-looking word helps only when the game accepts it.
  • Protect your score. Don't gamble on doubtful words when you're close to zero.
  • Play another round. Repeated runs make it easier to spot shapes and opportunities quickly.
